Mark Coulston’s art + architecture studio is Black Box. The studio is based in the inner west of Sydney. 30 years of architectural practice has generated an interest in the limitless possibilities of ‘spatial’ sculptural ‘constructions’. A desire to create an uninformed beauty, memory, reflection through a limited and restrained repetition of parts in naturally anchored structural patterns – balanced and rational. The pieces are explorations of common and universal dichotomies – consistency/diversity, continuity/opportunity, economy/richness, balance/change – all “looking for a new way of saying the same thing”.
